Daren is right.

He's right. We don't need Rayla. We never did, not for a moment. What have they even given us, in the face of all the men who have died for their little wars? We didn't need them then, and we don't need them now. We can end the war on our own.

The numbers don't lie and all the scouts coming back say the same thing. We can crush the Nasen forces in the field if we send a force to lure their mages away and then take them from the rear. They'll never see us coming, and they won't be so impressive without their damned fire-shooters. Father agrees, as well. It all aligns. It will work.

... this might actually end.

Dragons, how am I suppose to live, once it's over?

All I can see is war and blood and death, now. And the things that used to seem so perfectly appealing don't hold a bit of joy for me, anymore. Telling stories. What good does it do anyone? What's a story every done but given someone expectations of what to expect from the real world? What has it ever done but let someone down?

No, I'm through with stories. And I'm through with chasing after happy endings, because I'll never catch them. But once I'm through with this, too ... what is there, for me?

We sent a bird off today. A set of them, actually, to be sure that they'll reach where they're going. But the words are important enough that I feel I should repeat them here, too. There's enough Korin writing that it's worth my time,

House Hanmor hearby breaks its contracts and alliances with House Rayla, and will stand on its own against its enemies. Rayla's battles will never again be ours, because Rayla has never taken the time to make ours theirs. We were never bannermen, Lady Eve. We were allies.

Now we're not.
