We came across another razed village yesterday. It wasn't only destroyed, but burned and scattered. You've seen it all before, so I won't share the horrors. Some stories, no one wants to tell or hear.
It was the magic again, though. That much I can say for sure. The blackened beams were all covered in a thick coating of ice. With the freezing rain like it has been for weeks, now, no natural fire could have burned so long or so hot. What's more, the mages had sealed many of the villagers into their homes before torching it all. It was all set intentionally, intended to hurt.
Daren still says he thinks it's Nasen work, and I'm inclined to agree with him. I don't care if we haven't seen many mages on the field when we meet them. Daren says they must be hiding them, only bringing them out like this to confuse and torture us. It sounds just like that, doesn't it, Father? It sounds more likely to me than these rumours of a third party flying no colours sneaking between two armies and burning innocent villagefolk. Daren says they'll wait until we're terrified, and then bring all the mages together to the main force and drive us back to the castle. He says he's seen this tactic before, in the west.
You should listen to him more.
I'll meet you when we make camp on Friday evening. For now, be well and fight hard,
